Yoga Instructor

How long does it take to become a yoga instructor?

This depends on a few different factors:

  • Do you have prior knowledge of anatomy and physiology?
  • How much time do you have in between attendance days to study and practice?
  • How quickly do you learn?
  • Which qualification you choose (be careful as not all yoga courses will be accredited)

At The Fitness Education Academy we use Active IQ as our awarding body, this Ofqual accredited yoga course is ideal for those looking to qualify as a yoga teacher/instructor. We deliver this qualification as blended learning, which is a mixture of home study and face to face practical teaching, this is an ideal way to learn in your own time as well as gaining the practical skills required to become a yoga instructor.

The course content covers 5 units:

  •   - Underpinning principles of teaching yoga
  •   - Anatomy and physiology of yoga
  •   - Planning a series of yoga sessions

You then attend one assessment day for your practical assessment. You will also be assessed through coursework and a portfolio of evidence. The total qualification time for this course is 268 hours.

There are various types of yoga available, some people prefer to specialise in just one type of yoga, with this Active IQ Level 3 Diploma in Teaching Yoga you will be taught a wide range of information to help you teach a variety of styles. You will also learn the origins of yoga, an understanding of the relevance of yoga texts, the eight limbs of yoga and an understanding of the four paths of yoga. Also included in the course will be the knowledge and skills of different yoga techniques and concepts.

The home study part of the course mainly focuses on the anatomy and physiology which covers the structure and function of the skeletal system, the muscular system, the respiratory system, the circulatory system, the nervous system, the endocrine system and the effect yoga has on the different body systems. This is assessed through completion of a worksheet once you have completed the e-learning and studied your manual.
