Over the last few years there has been an increasing demand for personal trainers in the Glasgow area. Many years ago having a personal trainer was a rare luxury, however in more recent years many people have opted to engage with a personal trainer to help them reach their health and fitness goals.

How to become a personal trainer in Glasgow

Training to become a personal trainer is usually something someone does because of their love for fitness and wellness, rather than just ‘a job’. I don’t think I’ve ever met a personal trainer who says ‘I really dislike my job’. Choosing this as a career path is usually because the person has a passion for the subject, whether it’s watching their own body transformation through fitness and wellness, or simply educating themselves through reading up on a subject they are passionate about.

As Scotland’s longest established fitness training provider, we have noticed the change in this trend for personal trainers and have noticed many gyms and health clubs now advertising for more qualified personal trainers to join their team due to this increasing demand. Having a personal trainer used to be a ‘luxury’, but more people now see it as an investment in their health and wellbeing. As part of our service we also help these gyms and health clubs recruit personal trainers by arranging interviews with our students. This way they can recruit the personal trainer that they decide will fill the gap they may have in their facility.

Glasgow is a large city with new gyms and health clubs opening every year, obviously due to the rise in the number of these facilities the opportunity for personal training jobs is also growing. Most facilities will offer you a rental option where you will pay them for using the facility which then allows you to keep your earnings you receive from your clients. Other options are that the facility owners take a percentage of your earnings from your clients, or they opt to employ you. If you decide to take one of these opportunities it is wise to research a few main points:

  1.  Competition - How many other personal trainers work in the facility and what is the maximum that the facility will be taking on?
2   Opportunities – What is the current number of members of the facility
  3.  Earnings – Is there a set price that you have to charge your clients or is this at your discretion?
  4.  Rental – What is the monthly rent you have to pay (or the percentage of earnings)?
  5.  Resources – What resources are available and are other areas available for you to use at busy times?

It is also really important that you keep your qualifications current and continue your professional development. Having additional qualifications added to your personal training qualification opens up a whole new client base for you. E.g. training children, older adults, carrying out more specific exercises using specialised equipment such as kettlebells or TRX etc. Some personal trainers add massage to their qualification list which is another benefit for gaining a larger client base and increasing earnings.

For those considering a career as a personal trainer in Glasgow this couldn’t be a better time, the demand is high for recruitment due to the increase in those looking to take on a personal trainer.
